ARTS AND CULTURAL DEVELOPMENT
Art is a powerful vehicle with which to reach out to the most vulnerable youth in our communities . Our HIV/AIDS Edutainment also uses this component, i.e. Arts and Cultural Development, as a community outreach programme (see HIV and AIDS Edutainment below).
Community Outreach through Arts
- Arts as HIV/ AIDS Edutainment
NYDO developed a drama- “ Dreams”- which our outreach team stages at schools and uses as a facilitation tool in the Education on HIV and AIDS.
The combination of sexual health education with the Arts is designed to reproduce benefits beyond HIV prevention such as decreased teenage pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections and to confront deeply ingrained attitudes towards sex and sexuality.
- Drumming Circles
We also reach out to the surrounding communities through drumming circles which we facilitate upon request. NYDO has facilitated drumming sessions for the Gauteng Department of Education where drumming circles were extended to the teachers, who are working under stressful conditions; the staff of the local police station, staff of some our networking partners.
- Community based Arts and Culture Festivals
NYDO has successfully facilitated community based festivals in the following communities: Eersterust (National Heritage Arts festival in 2004- sponsored by NLDTF Arts and National Arts Council and the Vuvuzela Arts Festival in 2006); Kakamas in Northern Cape (Kakamas Sultana Kultuur fees in 2007 and 2008); Bungeni in Limpopo province (Hlanganani festival in 2009) and Postmasburg in the Northern Cape (Kgantsa festival in 2010).
- We realized that the community based festival model capacitates local communities to create job opportunities and showcase local talent, tell their stories and share the heritage of its people while the skills development, capacity building and economic empowerment processes which accompany the facilitation of the festival process ultimately contribute to the successful roll out of this model.
- These festivals held, highlighted the strengths and diversity of communities and particularly the journey, stories and significance of the local community. The essence of taking Arts festivals to the different communities gave the communities something to celebrate amidst all the negative environmental factors in their communities.
- In our experience, Community Based Festivals give local community members an opportunity to claim back their environment, robbed from them by crime and other social disorders, leaving them with a sense of value, hope and the ability to contribute to this wonderful democracy we are all part of.
